Juanli Sun

I was born and raised in China, followed by extended periods of travel and living elsewhere before settling in London. Landscape is deeply embedded in my being, engaging with it through photography is the most important form of my creativity and expression. The fine texture of sand and snow, the mysterious forms of water and cloud, are the most intriguing elements in my photographic work and ones I forever return to.

Over many visits, I’ve become deeply attached and moved by a remote part of the Gobi Desert, its ever changing forms offers something beyond what the eyes see, beyond what we can merely know, and I am excited to present this unique place. The transience within the Gobi fascinates me, its fine, loose sand effortlessly moved by wind, its ever-changing light making dunes morph into new lines, patterns and shapes. Contrasting qualities emerge: warm and cool, sharp and soft, closeness and distance, creating momental yet eternal abstract compositions. The interplay of varying light and landscape reflects movement and touch between bodies, and I see my femininity and sensuality within it, the challenging experiences that led me to seek softness, sensitivity and grace.
